THE MUSCLES OF FACIAL EXPRESSION:

Netter Plate Number: 21

Scalp
1. Occipitalis
2. Frontalis (occipitalis & frontalis are connected via the galea aponeurotica)
3. Procerus
4. 3 auricular muscles

Orbital group
1. Orbicularis oculi (inner palpebral blinks lid,outer orbital closes eye forcefully)

Nasal Group
1.Transverse and Alar part of nasalis muscle

Oral Group
1. orbicularis oris- puckers lips
2. levator labii superioris- lifts lips in sneering
3. levator labii superioris alaeque nasi- snarling
4. levator anguli oris- smiling (this muscle is deep to the levator labii superioris)
5. risorius - only muscle with no bony attachments
6. zygomaticus major & minor- grinning
7. depressor anguli oris- pouting
8. depressor labii inferioris- lowers lip (this muscle is found deep to depressor anguli oris)
9. mentalis- lifts skin of chin (as in pouting)
10. buccinator- arises from hamulus & pterygomandibular raphe in series w/ superior constrictor & blends into orbicularis oris
11. platysma

Dentists commonly use the term Modiolus, describing the central tendinous point at the corner of the mouth where the muscles of facial expression come together.
